Frequently Asked Questions About CSN Funding

What is CSN and how does it support my studies in Spain?

CSN (Centrala studiestödsnämnden) is the Swedish student finance authority. It provides grants and loans that allow Swedish students to study abroad, including Spanish language courses in Spain. You can apply for student grants and loans as of the autumn term in which you reach the age of 20. For more information, please visit the CSN website (Here)

Yes, of course! If your course meets CSN requirements (typically full-time study), you can apply for funding to cover your studies at CLIC Seville, Cadiz or Malaga. The financial aid can be used for the Intensive Spanish course with 20, 25 or 30 lessons per week.
CLIC offers attractive discounts for long-term students enrolled in CSN-approved programmes.

The programme includes the Spanish tuition, materials, some cultural activities, a welcome pack, an orientation walk on the first day, and—if selected—accommodation. You can also choose accommodation in a homestay, residence hall or a shared apartment to enhance your Spanish practice during your stay.

To qualify for student grants and loans, a number of requirements must be met:

  • The course or programme must be eligible for student finance and lead to exams or a recognised qualification.
  • You must be fully admitted without any conditions.
  • You need to have lived in Sweden for at least two consecutive years within the past five years (with some exceptions).
  • Funding within the EU/EEA and Switzerland is available for both on-site and online studies, while outside these areas it is generally limited to on-site study, unless there are specific reasons (such as illness or disability) preventing attendance.
  • You must be under 60 years old, although borrowing eligibility is reduced from the age of 51.
  • You cannot receive certain other benefits at the same time, such as sickness or activity support.
  • Student finance is limited in duration, depending on the level of study (e.g. up to 240 weeks for higher education).
  • If you have previously received funding, you must meet the required academic progress to qualify again.
  • Outstanding unpaid fees or debts may affect your eligibility; in such cases, you should contact CSN.

CSN funding can help cover:

  • Tuition fees
  • Accommodation
  • Living expenses

Additional loans may also be available for travel and insurance.

The amount depends on your personal situation, including:

  • Your age
  • Length of your course
  • Study intensity

As the cost of living and accommodation may be higher abroad, you can apply for an extra loan known as an additional loan for studies abroad. For more information, please visit the CSN website.

When it’s time to begin repayment, CSN will send you a payment schedule. If this is your first student loan, repayment will start no sooner than six months after you received the funding. However, if you have studied before and take out a new loan, this grace period does not apply.
The amount you repay each year depends on factors such as how much you borrowed, the repayment period, and the interest rate. You can repay your loan over a maximum of 25 years, but it must be fully paid off by the time you turn 64. Payments are usually lower at the beginning and increase over time, although you can choose to repay faster if you wish.
If you face financial difficulties, for example due to a drop in income, you can apply to reduce your payments temporarily. CSN will review your situation and decide if this is possible.
Make sure CSN always has your correct contact details, as this is required.
